Girls’ volleyball team embraces role as league favorite

The Scorpions can’t use the underdog card anymore.
After sharing back-to-back Pacific View League championships with Oxnard, the Camarillo High girls’ volleyball team isn’t sneaking up on anybody.
“We’re not underdogs,” head coach Rob Vandermay said. “If anything, we may have a target on our back.”
The Scorpions’ season begins in earnest this weekend during the SLO Town Tournament at San Luis Obispo. ACHS is scheduled to play six pool-play matches in two days.

Despite returning only three varsity players, Camarillo features a solid offensive team with talent and depth at every position.
Multiple Scorpions played two-person beach volleyball tournaments throughout the summer, honing quickness, reaction time and court awareness.

“It’s a totally different team and a totally different environment,” said Noelle Berry, a junior outside hitter who shares the captaincy with Nicole Pompilio and Danielle Helland.

“We lost a lot of seniors, but we’re close this year. We have good chemistry.”

The Scorpions are sick of sharing league titles. They want to win the PVL crown outright.
“I think we’re ready,” said Pompilio, a senior middle blocker. “There are still a couple things we need to tweak, but we’re ready.”
Players said they still need to work on passing and defense, including blocking at the net and digging.
Defense is something that should improve, Vandermay said.
“You have to want to be a great defensive player,” he said.
“It’s a matter of the heart as much as athleticism. You have to own the court.”
Helland, a three-year varsity player, sets the tone at setter.
“You’ve heard it before, but the setter is the quarterback or point guard of the team in volleyball,” Vandermay said. “She’s our coach on the court. . . .
“She’s one of our best hitters, and she’s a great all-around player who’s very smart.”
Helland, who also plays some opposite, likes what she sees in practice so far.
“It’s been good,” the junior said. “Everyone’s happy. We’re practicing as hard as we can, and we’ve been aggressive. I think we’ll have a good season.”

Berry is an athletic outside hitter who hits the ball hard.
“She’s still humble and coachable,” Vandermay said of Berry. “She has a great attitude.”
Pompilio is one of four middle blockers competing for playing time. Of the four, she is the strongest overall and has secured her spot in the starting lineup.
Abby Beillen, Leah Ramsaier and Jesse McLaughlin are also in the mix at middle blocker.
Beillen is the team’s hardest hitter as she pummels line-drive serves. Ramsaier uses her long arms and vertical leap to block shots.
McLaughlin, who nursed an injury for most of the summer, might be the best athlete among the middle blockers. When healthy, she can block and hit effectively. McLaughlin is expected to return next week.

Along with Berry, Hannah Kimball is a potent outside hitter.
Kimball uses her wide wingspan to generate power on her spikes.
“She’s a smart hitter who’s able to place the ball very well,” the coach said of Kimball.

Caitlin Pirruccello contributes at outside hitter and opposite. She’s a standout athlete with a good attitude, Vandermay said.
Outside hitter Amy Carr, who also plays basketball, is improving and showing flashes of hitting brilliance.
Hallie Willard, the daughter of ACHS varsity softball head coach Jack Willard, patrols opposite. A strong hitter with setter experience, Willard throws teams off by combining a power serve with a short serve.

Jo Rosario might be the best defender amongst the opposites. Rosario also chips in at setter, and she’s displayed a knack for good quick sets.

Sam Murphy and Erin Skoblick are defensive specialists. Murphy is an Oxnard transfer who’s strong at serving. A solid player fighting for playing time, Skoblick needs to play with more confidence, the coach said.
Vandermay is in his fifth season guiding the varsity girls’ squad. He spent 1996 leading the junior varsity girls and has coached the varsity boys’ team since 1997.
Junior varsity coach Matt Dawson, freshman coach Jon Ballard and assistants Steve Yoshimoto and Bryan Staples bolster the staff.

Dawson and Ballard played for Vandermay at Camarillo.

The Scorpions hope to do two things well: have fun and win.

“We always like to have fun on the court,” Pompilio said. “We all love the sport. As captains, we want to be positive and keep the team’s spirits up.

“We’re revved up for this weekend tournament.”

20th annual East-West Ventura County Volleyball All-Star Games

Friday, June 4th, the Scorpions will be represented by 4 seniors in the 20th annual East-West Ventura County Volleyball All-Star Games.

Kristen Martin, Emily Ochsner, and Hailey Keairns will be representing the Scorpions in the Girls Varsity Game and Garrett Carney will be representing the Scorpions in the Boys Varsity Game.

The games will be held at Moorpark College. The Girls game starts at 6 pm, and the Boys game follows right after.

Scorpions Head into Post Season Play - CIF Match Ups

The Camarillo Scorpions finished third in the Pacific View League, and now head into Post Season play CIF Playoffs.

The first round starts on Tuesday, May 11, at 7 pm. Camarillo will travel to Claremont to face the Claremont High School Wolfpack.

We realize it is a bit of a journey, but we hope you will make the trip with us to cheer for our team. We are very proud of our boys to be in the CIF Playoffs.

Pacific View League race too close to call

The Pacific View League may or may not be an impact player in the upcoming CIF-Southern Section Division I playoffs. But it knows how to stage a great league race.

With the emergence of Rio Mesa as a bona fide league power, the PVL’s Big Three of Oxnard, Camarillo and Rio Mesa are engaged in a thriller to the wire.

How close is it? By the time tonight’s matches end, there could be a three-way tie atop the final standings.

Rio Mesa holds the inside track at 8-1 in league and 15-6 overall. Right behind are Camarillo (7-2, 16-5) and Oxnard (7-2, 11-11). Camarillo would forge a veritable dead heat if it can topple Rio Mesa on its home floor tonight.

“I know this: If we could somehow win the league championship or earn a co-championship, I would value this one as much or more than any of the other league titles we’ve won,” said Camarillo coach Rob Vandermay. “The reason being is that the caliber of competition throughout the league is as good as its ever been.

“It’s just not the top three teams. We’ve been pushed by Pacifica and Channel Islands and that has helped us to become a better team.”

Rio Mesa’s bid to wrap up a solo crown was put on hold April 22 when it lost a back-and-forth match in five games to host Oxnard. Even the losing coach was enthralled.

“It was insane,” said Rio Mesa’s Jeff Hollowell.

Then, Camarillo threw the race into a dither last Thursday with a three-game sweep over Oxnard, 25-18, 25-21, 27-25. Oxnard had won the first meeting between the longtime rivals, also by a sweep.

Vandermay, for one, thinks all the tight competition has allowed his team to make steady improvement.

“The way we were pushed and challenged by everybody pretty much exposed our weaknesses,” Vandermay said. “We’ve been able to work and improve and get better as the season has progressed.”

If Camarillo does win tonight, the league has steps to resolve the three-way deadlock for purposes of seeding in the CIF-SS playoffs.

The first tiebreaker, head-to-head competition, would still result in a wash. The second tiebreak, games won, swings the advantage toward Rio Mesa.

The Spartans could lose to Camarillo in five games tonight, and still claim the top seed in the PVL. If Camarillo can defeat Rio Mesa in three or four games, the Scorpions would earn the top seeding for postseason.

Camarillo puts together a strong effort in sweep

It takes more than talent to win a league championship.

Tenacity and focus are crucial components, too.

The Camarillo High boys’ volleyball team exhibited plenty of both Thursday night, taking charge at the outset and stepping on the gas en route to a 25-18, 25-10, 25-18 sweep of visiting Pacifica in their Pacific View League matchup.

Jesse Flitt notched 30 assists, two kills and two blocks, Danny Reilly had 10 kills, five blocks and two service aces and Connor Hoybjerg finished with 10 kills as Camarillo improved to 2-0 in league and 1 overall.

According to coach Rob Vandermay, the Scorpions also may have taken a valuable step forward.

“That’s the most complete match we’ve played this season,” said Camarillo’s 14-year coach. “We’ve played matches against teams that aren’t as good as Pacifica, and we’ve struggled to put them away. One of our problems has been playing well in the first game, and not so well in the second game.

“Tonight, there was no letup by our players.”

That’s no accident, said Flitt, a junior setter. After finishing third in the Pacific View League a year ago — the program’s lowest finish in 10 years — the Scorpions have bigger things in mind this season.

“We want to win a league championship, and that means we’ll need to do well against Oxnard and Rio Mesa,” Flitt said. “Then we want to do well in the (CIF-Southern Section playoffs). Last year’s team tended to be separated in a lot of ways. We don’t have that problem this year. We’re very close as a team.

“We all hang out together, and that closeness shows up in how we play together.”

Reilly, a junior middle blocker, believes the Scorpions are making a concerted effort to retain their focus for entire matches.

“We’ve had times when we lost our concentration and gave up a number of points,” Reilly said. “Tonight shows what we can do when we keep our focus for the whole match.”

Camarillo found itself in tied at 11-11 in Game 1 before taking control with a 6-0 spurt. The Scorpions also took the last four points of the game, including kills by Garrett Carney and Flitt.

In Game 2, Camarillo built a 17-10 lead, then scored eight consecutive points to seal the game.

The Scorpions constructed leads of 16-8 and 22-15 in Game 3 before closing out the match.

Not only did Camarillo ride a balanced attack, it used a stellar defensive effort to hold off Pacifica.

The effort was epitomized by libero Jose Rojas on the very first point of Game 3 when he made a sprawling save on a kill attempt, then found his feet in time to make the kill. Rojas finished with seven digs.

Pacifica (3-4, 1-1) got eight kills and two blocks from Israel Ibarra and six kills and one block from Lubag. But the Tritons are still searching for consistency, according to coach Junior Mosones.

“We need to build chemistry, and that can only come from playing matches and working hard in practice,” Mosones said. “We’ve got three first-year starters, and another first-year varsity player.

“We’ve got some talent, but we haven’t played a lot of matches against teams like Camarillo. We know we’ve got work to do.”

It was an unfamiliar and uncomfortable place the Camarillo High boys’ volleyball team found inself occupying a season ago.

Third place in the Pacific View League’s final standings.

“That was the first time in 10 seasons we hadn’t finished first or second,” says Camarillo coach Rob Vandermay. “It wasn’t a very good feeling for the entire team.”

A year later, the Scorpions look like a serious contender for the league championship.

Camarillo has begun the season at 9-2, including non-league victories over Ventura and Buena. The Scorpions fell behind 2-1 in games to visiting Ventura on Tuesday night, then stormed back for a 25-21, 25-27, 15-25, 25-19, 15-11 victory.

Camarillo had a good reason for its third-place finish last season — youth, youth and still more youth.

“We were very inconsistent,” said Vandermay. “We were mostly sophomores and juniors last season, and it was difficult for us to sustain a high level of play. We would play well for stretches, then fall back into some bad play.”

The Scorpions still have youthful look. Only four seniors are on the roster, including top hitter Connor Hoybjerg. Junior setter Jesse Flitt and junior hitters Danny Reilly, Christian VanOuwerkerk and Jose Rojas all play key roles.

“They’ve grown up together,” said Vandermay. “They know each other, and they know how to play together as a team.”

Vandermay believes this year’s team is one of the deepest in school history.

“It doesn’t matter what rotation we’re in — we’ve got a bunch of guys who can play,” he said. “We don’t have any weaknesses.”

As the Scorpions elevate their consistency on the court, they no doubt draw inspiration from their coach. The only coach the program has known recently celebrated victory No. 150.

Among Vandermay’s accomplishments was directing the Scorpions to the CIF-Southern Section Division III championship in 2003.

“A lot of coaches have probably reached 150 victories a lot sooner than I have,” said Vandermay, who also coaches the girls’ team.

Camarillo rallies to edge Ventura in five games

Camarillo High boys’ volleyball coach Rob Vandermay brought his team outside and told them not to come back into the gym until they were ready to play.

And his Scorpions responded by taking the final two games of a five-game thriller with visiting Ventura on Tuesday night, 25-21, 25-27, 15-25, 25-19, 15-11.

“I was proud of the way they responded,” said Vandermay.

Danny Reilly had 15 kills and five blocks, Christian VanOuwerkerk and Connor Hoybjerg had eight kills apiece, Jesse Flitt had 40 assists and Jose Rojas had 10 digs for Camarillo (9-2).

Tylour Mullaney and Kevin Tanner had 15 assists apiece for Ventura (8-2), which was without starting setter Zach Svenson. Michael Henchy and Dustin Neary had 10 kills apiece.

Boys’ volleyball team has a bad taste in its mouth from last season

The Scorpions are mad, and now they want to get even.

Camarillo High’s boys’ volleyball team had placed first or second in league for 10 straight seasons—until last year, when the Scorpions finished third to Oxnard and Rio Mesa in the Pacific View League standings.

“I didn’t like it,” Camarillo head coach Rob Vandermay said after practice on Monday.

Vandermay does like the Scorpions’ chances to make a run at a PVL championship with this year’s squad. Camarillo entered this week 7-2 overall.

“At least three teams will compete for the title, and that will make us all better for the playoffs,” the coach said. “It will be a challenge. It will not be easy.

“I like this group. They have a lot of fun, and I trust them and I respect them. They’re fun players and fun people.”

Nobody better exemplifies the Scorpions’ loosey-goosey nature than senior opposite Garrett Carney, a second-year varsity player nicknamed “Orange,” his favorite color.

Carney, 17, has been riding BMX race bikes since he was 3. One time he ate 1½ pounds of hamburger meat at an F. McLintocks restaurant in San Luis Obispo for a free T-shirt.

“He marches to a beat of a different drummer,” Vandermay said. “His teammates accept him for who he is and like him for that.”

Carney isn’t just about fun. He’s out to win, too.

“I want to win a league title and go far in the CIF playoffs,” the senior said. “We have fun at practice, but we’re serious at the same time.”

Jesse Flitt, a setter and team captain, has improved his court awareness and improved his passing. The junior, who played basketball his first two years at ACHS, distributes the ball to all three hitters along the front row, and keeps defenses on edge.

“We have great team unity,” said Flitt, who also enjoys surfing. “We’re good defensively, and we can run a quick offense.”

Senior Connor Hoybjerg, an outside hitter, is the other captain. Hoybjerg leaps high to hammer the ball down for spikes.

The captain said he wants the Scorpions to improve their passing and play with more energy.

“When we play well, we’re pumped up,” said Hoybjerg, who plans to study neuroscience at Brigham Young University.

“If we mess up or get down on ourselves—that hurts. We need to play with intensity all the time, regardless of the score.”

Jose Rojas is a defensive specialist who plays at a consistent level, Vandermay said. Rojas can also play libero.

The junior said Camarillo communicates well on the court, but there are always elements to improve.

“We’re struggling with serving,” said Rojas, who was one of only a handful of varsity players working out after Monday’s practice ended.

“We need to stay consistent and put points on the board.”

Other Scorpions are also playing well.

Junior outside hitter Christian Vanouwerkerk has improved his strength and is another tall hitter who can smack the ball hard.

Middle blocker Danny Reilly, a 6-foot-6 junior, can intimidate opponents with his size and athleticism.

“When he gets a good set, it’s like thunder comes down hard,” Vandermay said of Reilly.

Shaun York and J.T. McGinley add depth at middle blocker. York is a solid all-around player who can jump high but needs to work on the mental aspect of the game.

McGinley, the only sophomore on the team, hits hard and jumps high. McGinley’s still honing his blocking skills.

David Florick uses his lefthanded shot at opposite. Defensive specialist Pace Martin’s passing is improving.

The Scorpions hosted their first Cam Classic, an 18-team tournament, on March 6.

Vandermay, now in his 14th season leading the boys, has won five league titles and a CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship in 2003.

“We have a solid six players on the court at all times,” the coach said. “We have a solid front line and back line. This year, the chemistry is great. It makes coaching fun.”

This one will be unique in that most of the players from the 2003 CIF Championship team will be playing, including for the first time - Eric Vance. He is, by far, the best volleyball player in school history. He is currently playing for the US National team with a shot at playing in the next Olympics and plays professionally for a club team in Puerto Rico. We will be featuring Eric at the Alumni Match and announcing that we are retiring his #12 jersey. Please join us if you can.

Our Varsity Boys head for San Luis Obispo where they will play in a tournament on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday, our Junior Varsity Boys head to Santa Maria to play in the tournment there.

The Frosh Soph Boys will be playing in the Newbury Park tournament on Saturday.

What an exciting way to kick off the Boys Volleyball Season!

Adolfo Camarillo High School is hosting the First Annual Camarillo Classic Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, March 6th, starting at 8:30 am.

Varsity teams from Camarillo, Channel Islands, Buena, Ventura, Newbury Park, Agoura, Rio Mesa, Nipomo, West Ranch, Moorpark, Calabasas, Simi Valley, Santa Maria, Pacifica, Nordhoff, Righetti and Hueneme will converge on three sites for a complete day of volleyball competition at its best!

The teams will be playing in the ACHS Gym, as well as the gyms of Rio Mesa and Pacifica High Schools, with the final playoffs culminating at Camarillo and Pacifica.

Camarillo, Palmdale, West Ranch, Agoura, Righetti and Channel Islands will start play at the Camarillo gym.

Pacifica, Nordhoff, Moorpark, Calabasas, Ventura and Hueneme will start play at the Pacifica gym.

Rio Mesa, Newbury Park, Santa Maria, Nipomo, Simi Valley and Buena will start play at the Rio Mesa gym.

With our victory over Rio Mesa last Thursday night, the Camarillo Scorpions Volleyball team won a share of the Pacific View League Championship for the second year in a row. Congratulations to our ladies for Back to Back Championships! We are now headed for the CIF Playoffs.

Camarillo drew a bye for the first round of playoffs held Tuesday night, so our girls will be playing their first CIF Playoff game on Thursday night, November 12th, against Oaks Christian at 7 pm in the ACHS Gym.

It was a wonderful evening, honoring our Senior players in their final home game of the regular season. The first game was played entirely by our Seniors, and it was fun to see some of them playing in positions they don't usually play. Also, Lauren, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury, made a couple of very brief appearances to serve in the rotation. She even had a couple of aces! It was also a great treat to see the video put together by the Berry's for Senior Night. What a bunch of cute kids our Seniors were and ARE!

In their last battle, Rio Mesa achieved victory over Hueneme (Oxnard, CA), 3-1, in a league battle. Camarillo Scorpions DIG PINK!

Our Girls Volleyball Teams are hosting a DIG PINK Volleyball Event to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness on Thursday, October 29th. We will be playing the Oxnard Yellowjackets so it is sure to be an exciting evening. We hope you will come and show your support of our teams and of Breast Cancer Awareness by wearing PINK to this event.

Our Frosh Soph Team will play at 4:00 pm. Our Junior Varsity will play at 5:15 pm. Our Varsity will play at 6:30. In 2008, the Scorpions and the Yellowjackets shared the Pacific View League title in Volleyball. Come cheer our girls on.

What is Dig Pink?
Dig Pink is a National Breast Cancer awareness rally that is taking place throughout the month of October 2009. High Schools and Colleges are hosting Dig Pink matches all across the country to help educate and raise funds to help fight breast cancer. Wear something PINK and show your support!!!

The Side-Out Foundation Mission
The Side-Out Foundation (Side-Out) was established in 2004 by a group of individuals drawn together by their love of volleyball, but who also share a similar passion to be a part of the war against breast cancer. Side-Out’s mission is to raise money for the war against breast cancer through the recreational activity of volleyball.

The Side-Out Foundation is a Virginia based 501 (c)3 Non-Profit organization with a serving Board of Directors and advisors from the healthcare sector to provide oversight and guidance regarding the strategic direction and recommended allocation of donations and grants.
